The ancient theater of Kassopi

Ancient Kassopi, built at an altitude of 550-650 meters, is located on a plateau surrounded by lush slopes, offering stunning views of the Ambracian Gulf and the Ionian Sea. However, its strategic location was chosen not only for its natural beauty and unobstructed view but primarily for the security it provided and control over important land routes. The Kassopians wanted their city to be advanced, with a well-organized geometric layout, placing the agora and public buildings in prominent positions. In the early 3rd century BCE, they constructed the city’s large theater, positioned on the slopes of the highest hill, below the northwest acropolis. This choice allowed them to enjoy not only theatrical performances but also a unique panoramic view. The theater, which could hold 5,000-6,000 spectators, was abandoned at the end of the 1st century BCE, and the city’s abandonment led to its destruction due to vegetation and natural disasters. However, its stage, with the proskenion and six columns, remains an impressive example of ancient Greek architecture.
