Exploring Koronisia and the Monastery of Panagia Rodias

A day trip from Paleros to Koronisia offers a peaceful immersion into the unique wetlands of the Ambracian Gulf. Koronisia, reached by a narrow strip of land between lagoons, is surrounded by rare bird species, calm waters, and an atmosphere that feels untouched by time. On the return route, after passing Vigla and following a beautiful path beside the lagoons and the foothills of Mavrovouni, you arrive at the Monastery of Panagia Rodias.
The monastery was first built in the 8th century AD and is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. Though later damages destroyed its original form, it was rebuilt in the 16th–17th century. Local traditions tell of the Virgin’s icon repeatedly returning on its own to a spot near the lagoon—where a small shrine stands today—leading the faithful to build the current monastery on higher ground.

During Ottoman times, the monastery owned vast property and played a crucial role in protecting local Christians. With its serene courtyard, history-filled stones, and sweeping views over the wetlands, it remains a deeply spiritual stop. You may also walk the 10-km narrow strip of land toward Louros, an unforgettable path between water and sky. This short excursion blends nature, history, and gentle exploration into a memorable single-day journey.
