Τhe historical city of Ioannina

Ioannina is the largest city in Epirus and a famous getaway for Greeks throughout the year. The city is located next to a magical lake, between big mountains, an hour and a half from the city of Paleros. The city was built on the Egnatia road, the road that connects Europe with Asia, one of the oldest roads in the world.

From the Stone Age, the ancient Greek civilizations, the Roman and Byzantine despots, to the Ottoman pasades and the modern Greek state, the traces of history lead to attractions that you should not miss.
All these influences from different eras and cultures are evident in the architecture of the buildings, the churches, the castles, the monasteries, the mosques, the shopping streets of the city, and the typical flavors of the region.
Despite its long history, Ioannina can be perceived as a modern city as well. Being a mostly student city with many universities, you can find countless vibrant alternatives for cafes, restaurants, and nightlife.

The imposing castle of Ioannina with its Ottoman buildings, built in 528 AD. by the emperor Justinian, the unique lake of Ioannina, where you can do your morning cycling walk, the small island of Ali Pasa that is located in the lake, the many museums and the breathtaking Perama cave with stalagmites and stalactites are just a few of the many different things you can see in the city.
